About the Job

Let's face it... when people think "energy usage data," they don't necessarily think "fun and interesting." The challenge for the UX team is to take complex data and make it simple and relevant for everyday people around the world (millions of people in fact). We combine best design practices with our strong foundation in behavioral science to inspire real, positive action. UX is a core part of Opower's success - without great product design we would not have been able to achieve the amazing results we have to date, and there's a lot more to come. Exciting things are happening here on the design front, and we're looking to add some rockstars to our team. Our team is a small and nimble with limited hierarchy and lots of ownership. We're looking for designers who are out-of-the-box thinkers, passionate about our mission, excited to move their product through a complete lifecycle, and want to dive in and get their hands dirty.
A portfolio is required. We are looking for case studies of extremely usable, consumer-oriented product design that showcase your UX skills, your design process, and your creativity for solving design challenges.

About You

  • You have an MS (preferred) in HCI, Design, Computer Science, or related field.
  • You have at least 6 years of relevant work experience, including fluency with a wide range of design methods and usability principles. You're passionate about UX design and connected to the industry, the latest trends, and best practices.
  • You've done this before. You've led consumer product design projects from conception to build. You're a pro at storyboarding, UI design, wireframing, prototyping, spec-writing. You never overlook an edge case. You run your own usability sessions and glean insights from interviews.
  • You're uber creative. You often think of solutions that no one else has considered. Your portfolio inspires us to look at something in a new way.
  • You're a big-picture thinker. You can connect the dots between strategic business needs and UX design problems.
  • You can play with others. You can handle projects solo, but thoroughly enjoy collaborating with a partner or a team. You're seasoned at presenting your ideas in various levels of details to team members and key stakeholders.
  • You can bootstrap it when you need to. You're comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously and thinking out-of-the-box to solve problems in creative ways.
  • You're excited to be a part of a new design challenge. At Opower, we're defining how to best design for behavioral change towards energy efficiency, and you will be a key part of this effort. We don't expect you to already be an expert in it, but it should get you excited.
  • Extra credit: Experience with Agile, behavioral science, designing global products.

Responsibilities

  • You'll own UX design for one or more product areas of the Opower offering. You'll be designing for print, web, mobile, and devices.
  • You'll participate in the entire design & development process, including close collaboration with scrum teams.
  • You'll help drive the UX vision for future products and new features.
  • You'll lead usability testing and incorporate findings into your designs.
  • You'll be a true advocate for our users.

    About the Company

Opower is an energy efficiency and smart-grid software company. Our products encourage energy efficiency by empowering people to make better decisions about the ways they use energy every day. With industry-leading data analytics and a unique approach to customer engagement, we're changing the way the world understands personal energy consumption, and helping more than 40 utilities---including 8 of the US’s 10 largest—achieve unprecedented, sustainable energy savings in tens of millions of households.

In March 2010, President Obama gave his national policy speech on green-job creation from our office in the Washington, DC area. In September of 2010, we were named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, for creating "innovations that will have a critical impact on the future of business and society.” In January, the Washington Post called us one of "5 Companies that will Lead in 2011," and in March, the Wall Street Journal named us a Top 10 Cleantech company. By the end of this year, the energy we save will equal a third of the power produced by the entire US solar industry, and have the impact of effectively removing 50,000 homes from the grid.

Founded in 2007, Opower has offices in Arlington, Virginia, and San Francisco, California. Our rapidly expanding team includes software engineers, product specialists, behavioral scientists, statisticians, marketing experts, infographic designers, and efficiency advocates.
